Who is D.L. Smith?

DL Smith is the founder of our company and a native Topekan.  DL attended Hayden High School and Washburn University in Topeka.  He was a journeyman electrician and superintendent for Topeka-based Allied Electric in the late 60’s and early 70’s.

Steadily, DL grew his business by paying attention to the client, charging a fair profit for a fair amount of work, and ensuring the customer felt they got a great value for the service provided.  Due to DL Smith Electric’s growing demand and increasing success, the company moved into its present headquarters.

Through DL’s 35 years in the electrical trade, he has strived to keep current with clients needs by taking a lead role in the development and participation of industry-related organizations. Some of his appointments to local, state, and national committees are as follows:

- Member - Board of Trustees of the Associated Specialty Contractors of America (A.S.C)
- Past District V Vice President - National Electrical Contractors Association (N.E.C.A.)
- Member - State Building Advisory Commission
- Past Chairman - NECA, National Government Affairs Committee
- Chairman - TQM Task Force – Electrical Contracting Foundation
- Fellow - Academy of Electrical Contracting
- Instructor - Journeyman and Master Code Preparation for the State of Kansas
- Member - Electrical Appeals Board for the City of Topeka
- Past Member - Board of Directors, AGC of Kansas

In 2005, DL retired, turning over the business to his son, Shawn.  DL Smith Electric continues to grow and operate utilizing the fundamental business practices DL put in place many years ago.
